Transport Sector Profiles

To provide insight in the transport sector of individual countries in the ATO region, country profiles are being developed. These profiles provide a concise (6-page) summary covering country documents and factsheets, with historical data, baseline projections, mitigation, and policy information vis-à-vis SDGs and the Paris Agreement. As a first step we have now developed 40 country profiles with historical data. In the remaining period of phase 3, we plan to expand these profiles in 2024 with policy information and 2030 projections (where applicable).

Transport State of Play Presentations

The ATO team is developing from time to time country focused State of Play presentations. These give an overview of the transport sector in the concerned country by presenting historic trends as well as outlooks in some cases for key topics covered by the ATO such as transport infrastructure, activity and services, access and connectivity, road safety, climate change, air pollution and economic impact of the transport sector. Apart from data the State of Play presentations also give an overview of existing policies, relevant targets and policy instruments.

Government representatives, donor agencies or other groups who are interested in a specific Transport Sector State of Play presentation for a country please contact info@asiantransportobservatory.org

Transport and Climate Profiles

These "Transport and Climate Profiles" have been updated are part of the research work entitled "Transport NDC Gap Analysis for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) in Asia and the Pacific" which is being implemented and builds on the work of the Asian Transport Outlook (ATO). The research is being co-funded by UKAID through the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the High-Volume Transport (HVT) Applied Research Program managed by DT Global International Development UK LTD (DT Global). The research is being implemented under HVT057 (Transport Decarbonisation Index) whose lead research supplier is the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport. These profiles are designed to complement the main report of the research entitled Bridging the Gap: A Deep Dive into NDCs and Transport Policy Landscapes in Low- and Middle-Income Asian Economies (to be released soon through this link). While intended as supplementary materials, they also function as standalone knowledge products.

These profiles are a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and relevant stakeholders involved in the transportation sector. By offering insights into current trends, challenges, and opportunities, these profiles facilitate informed decision-making and strategic planning. This profile is structured into two main sections: Data Insights and Policy Insights. Under "Data Insights", individual components at the intersection of transport and climate change are detailed. Similarly, the "Policy Insights" section outlines various policy documents, measures, and targets.

Road Safety Profiles

The ATO road safety profiles offer insights into the road safety in, initially, 24 Asia-Pacific countries by utilizing road safety related data from various sources and policy information extracted from a range of documents.

The first page presents key indicators on socioeconomic status, road crash fatalities, road infrastructure, and road vehicle motorization. On the second page, for countries where the ATO has already collected policy information on road safety, we display the top five policy documents covering road safety, road safety targets, and other targets indirectly impacting road safety. There is also an analysis of targets based on typology.

The profiles were created in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory and they contribute to the Asia-Pacific Regional Road Safety Seminar on December 5-7, 2023.

E-mobility Profiles

The electric mobility country profiles are a product of the collaboration between the Asian Transport Outlook (ATO) and the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI). UEMI is the mobility hub of the Urban Living Lab Centre, a UN-Habitat collaborating platform. This effort is supported through the UEMI-coordinated SOLUTIONSplus project which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The electric mobility country profiles provide a brief description of the transport sector, the status of e-mobility and go in more depth on the policy landscape for electric mobility.

In the coming months additional electric mobility profiles will be added.

Green Roads Profiles

The Asian Transport Outlook (ATO) team has crafted the "Green Roads Profiles," an innovative resource that combines multi-dimensional data and indicators, with compiled excerpts of relevant policies designed to foster sustainable road infrastructure development and maintenance. These profiles are meticulously structured into specific sections, each focusing on crucial sustainability aspects:

  • Road Vehicles and Infrastructure: This section analyzes the current technologies and infrastructural practices, spotlighting areas for improvement and innovation to enhance sustainability.
  • Quality of Life and Inclusive Growth Indicators related to Road Transport: It evaluates how road transport impacts public health, safety, and overall community well-being, offering insights into social sustainability.
  • Decarbonization and Climate Resilience Indicators: This part details the emission metrics and resilience strategies necessary to mitigate climate change impacts specific to the road sector.
  • Other Environmental Indicators: It encompasses a broader range of ecological metrics, such as biodiversity impacts, noise pollution, and water quality effects, rounding out the environmental assessment.

Additionally, each profile includes a comprehensive listing of policy documents and measures specific to each country, providing policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders with tailored information to guide strategic decisions related to the greening of roads.

Gender in Transport Profiles

The Asian Transport Outlook (ATO) is proud to release its first set of Gender in Transport profiles. These profiles had been developed to provide an in-depth look at the gender dynamics within the transport sector of various countries, as well as policy measures that are related to gender in the transport sector. Each profile contains critical data points such as female employment statistics, wage comparisons, the share of females in transport-related employment, and the prevalence of females in high-level decision-making positions. Additionally, the profiles highlight policy measures aimed at improving gender inclusivity and safety within the transport sector, presenting a holistic view of the current state and progress of gender integration in transport.

The primary purpose of these profiles is to contribute towards the discussions on the gender disparities and progress in the transport sector, aiding policymakers, stakeholders, and development agencies in making informed decisions. By collecting, collating, and organizing available data from official, and vetted secondary sources, the profiles aim to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities for elevating gender equality in transport. Ultimately, these profiles serve as a vital resource for driving targeted interventions and policies that promote a more inclusive and equitable transport environment across Asia.
