The Asian Transport Observatory presented at the "Towards a Monitoring and Tracking Framework for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport" workshop organized by the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG), SLOCAT, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) held last February 19-20, 2026 in Geneva.
Drawing on ATO's work across Asia, the presentation was delivered by Sudhir Gota, Co-Team Lead of the ATO, which outlined how open data, policy tracking, and cohesive indicators can support evidence-based decision-making aligned with global frameworks such as the SDGs, the Paris Agreement, Aichi 2030 Declaration, and the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport. It emphasized ATO’s core approach—Avoid, Shift, Improve, and Finance—which focuses on maintaining data integrity, expanding measurement beyond outcomes to drivers, strengthening storytelling and partnerships, and ensuring flexible financing for sustained monitoring systems. In 2025, ATO co-published a document with the same title. The document highlights nine foundational elements to guide the monitoring of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport.
The session also showcased ATO's growing knowledge base, including over 500 national indicators, 300+ urban indicators, and a policy database covering more than 13,500 measures across the region. These efforts are complemented by interactive country profiles, analytical products, and partnerships with regional and national stakeholders, demonstrating how data can be translated into actionable insights for policy and investment planning.
