Climate Financing: Transport Sector in Asia - Visualization

ATO - 2024-11-26

Climate finance is pivotal to achieving global sustainability goals, especially when addressing challenges associated with mitigating and adapting to climate change. The dashboard presents a detailed overview of climate finance flows specific to the transport sector in Asia, capturing regional trends, funding distribution, and sources of investment. In this blog, we dive into the significant trends that emerge from the data. This is based on the report and data by the 2024 edition of the Global Landscape of Climate Finance (Naran et al., 2024).

Some key points:

  • Transport accounts for 32% of climate finance in Asia. It is the second in terms of ranking, after energy systems.
  • The data shows the current skewedness towards mitigation in climate financing in the transport sector, wherein mitigation initiatives account for 99% of the total.
  • Private and public financing are relatively equal, with private financing accounting for 55% of the total in 2022.
  • It is interesting to note that households/individual finance accounts for almost half of the climate financing in the transport sector in the region (e.g. purchase of EVs). This is a unique case across the sectors in the region (e.g. household/individual finance only accounts for 5% for energy systems; 7% in buildings and infrastructure ; all others are 0%).
  • The data also reveals the difference in terms of the scale of the climate financing in East Asia and the Pacific, which accounts for 95% of the total climate finance for the transport sector in Asia (based on the dataset).
