The Asian Transport Observatory has released a new report examining the evolving landscape of transport-related air pollution in Asia and the Pacific. Beyond the Tailpipe: Asia’s Evolving Transport Emissions Challenge highlights how rapid motorization, expanding transport networks, and growing freight demand continue to shape the region’s emissions profile.

While stronger vehicle emission standards and fuel quality improvements have helped reduce some pollutants, the report shows that new challenges are emerging. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles remain a major source of harmful emissions, non-exhaust sources such as tire and brake wear are becoming increasingly important, and domestic shipping is emerging as a significant but often overlooked contributor to air pollution.

Drawing on ATO data and policy analysis across Asian economies, the report identifies key trends, policy responses, and remaining knowledge gaps. It underscores the need for a broader policy approach—one that looks beyond tailpipe emissions and addresses the full transport system to achieve cleaner air and healthier cities across the region.
