The Asian Transport Observatory (ATO) has released a substantial update to both its National Database and Urban Database, expanding data coverage, incorporating new sources, and refreshing key indicators across the Asia-Pacific region.

National Database: Expanded Coverage and New Data Sources

The latest National Database update includes refreshed (latest available data) and newly added indicators for 43 economies across Asia and the Pacific, covering a wide range of transport, economic, environmental, energy, accessibility, and development themes.

More than 1,200 national-level country-indicator combinations were updated with data from official sources.

In terms of the secondary sources, ATO incorporated information from several new international datasets and research sources, including updates from Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR), Global Burden of Disease (GBD), International Air Transport Association (IATA), International Road Federation (IRF), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), State of Global Air, World Bank, among others.

In addition to these new sources, numerous existing datasets were updated, including data from the EMBER, International Trade Centre (ITC), International Labour Organization (ILO), International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), International Energy Agency (IEA), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, UN Population Database, and several other international organizations.

Urban Database: New Indicators for More Than 460 Cities

ATO has also released a major update to its Urban Database, which now includes a broad set of new indicators derived from global geospatial datasets, urban analytics platforms, and international databases.

The update introduces or refreshes approximately 160 urban indicators, drawing on sources such as GHS Urban Centre Database, HeiGIT, UN-Habitat, UNDESA, Sony CSL, and various academic research.

The largest addition comes from the GHS Urban Centre Database, constituting more than 100 indicators related to urban form, population, density, and spatial characteristics. Additional datasets provide new insights into accessibility, environmental performance, air quality, and urban mobility patterns.

Users can explore the updated datasets through ATO’s data platforms and dashboards, where the new indicators will be progressively integrated into visualizations, analytical products, and country and city profiles.
