2026-06-29 Bangkok, Thailand

The Asian Transport Observatory participated in the Seventh Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, joining the session "Sustainable Transport and Mobility for Inclusive and Low-Carbon Development" at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. Representing the Asian Transport Observatory, Sudhir Gota, Co-Team Lead, joined the panel discussion on practical experiences, policy tools, financing approaches, and implementation challenges in delivering transport systems that are both inclusive and low- or zero-carbon.

The session highlighted the central role of sustainable transport in connecting climate action with the Sustainable Development Goals. Discussions focused on how public transport, electric mobility, active mobility, digital tools, and integrated planning can support just and low-carbon transitions, while improving access for women, children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities.

A key focus of the session was financing. Participants discussed how targeted investment, public and private financing mechanisms, multilateral development bank support, green bonds, and blended finance can help accelerate the transition to low- and zero-carbon mobility. The session also emphasized that sustainable transport must not only reduce emissions, but also improve affordability, safety, access, and resilience.

The discussion was held in the context of the first United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport, 2026–2035, which recognizes the role of transport in advancing sustainable development across all modes, from walking and cycling to public transport, road, rail, maritime, inland waterways, and aviation. The session contributed to ongoing regional and global efforts to align transport policy, finance, and implementation with both the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.

Through its participation, the Asian Transport Observatory underscored the importance of data, evidence, and policy analysis in supporting countries as they plan, finance, and implement inclusive, resilient, and low-carbon transport systems.
